Description
Brazilwood is isolated from the heartwood of members of the Caesalpinia species. The original tree in Brazil from which it was isolated was overharvested and is now protected. The dye is sensitive to pH levels and the color can range from bright orange to blue red. Brazilwood is somewhat sensitive to light.
When extracting the dye, it is best to add a Tums© tablet per gallon of water. Use the wood chips at 25-50% weight of fiber. After simmering the chips for 1 to 3 hours let it sit overnight before using. After filtering out the wood chips add the mordanted fiber and simmer.
