Description

Slate frames have been used to mount embroidery projects since the 1500s. The straight sides allow you to tighten the fabric in both directions without distortion. The tighter the fabric the better the resulting piece of embroidery. Both the warp and the weft direction of the ground fabric can be sewn onto the frame before the pins are added to the stretcher bars. A small set of holes have been added to the main rails to allow you to sew the fabric on without the threads wrapping around the outside of the frame.

The entire frame is hand made. We finish them with 5 coasts of polyurethane, using progressively finer sand paper in between each successive coat. The resulting finish is very smooth and will not catch even the finest silk threads.

Illustrated instructions on how to mount the fabric are included.  If you wish to order a custom sized frame for your project please contact us for information and pricing.  All of our products are made to order, please allow 3-4 weeks for us to make your item.

These are wonderful! Well made, well sanded, lovely to work with.

Gorgeous frames! I have two. My first one was a 24″x36″ in purple heart. For my second one (12″x18″), I ordered cherry — but in order to receive my order sooner, I asked that I be surprised with any in-stock wood. I received white oak, which was so lovely I thought I should have ordered it all along. I would actually love it if you had a “woodworker’s choice” option to select for wood type. I’ll probably order again, and being surprised (if I don’t have a strong wood preference) is fun!
